When I spoke to my mother about how women are paid less than men I was a bit shocked by her perspective. She argued that men have more responsibilities and therefore need more money.
And then it occurred to me that in spite of all the talks she gave me about being independent she did not actually believe I deserved to be paid as much as a man. My education and experience didn’t really matter – men should make more.
I didn’t argue with her because it’s nearly impossible to change the opinion of someone over fifty. It just made me realize that sometimes the place other people put us in and the place we put ourselves are exactly the same.
