Mental Health Tip: Talk to a Stranger

Sept 3 16

One day I sat waiting for the Orange Line listening to my music and not wanting to be bothered. A man sat down next to me and pointed to a piece of paper while he spoke to me.  I did not remove my headphones and I tried not to look at him but he did not stop speaking. He began to ask me questions and I said, “I’m just trying to listen to my music here” and he replied that I had “hurt his feelings.”

Now he probably just said that to make me feel bad and it did for a little while but then I went back to ignoring strangers.  But for whatever reason strangers like talking to me and I had to make a decision – Am I going to be rude to everyone or just have a 2 minute conversation with someone I will probably never see again?

So now I talk to strangers and sometimes a random conversation with someone I’ve never met is the best part of my day.
