Mental Health Tip #18: Smile

smileThis was a hard one for me.  I used to almost never smile and often walked around with a grim expression.  Perfect strangers would comment,

“It can’t be that bad, Smile.”

This only made it worse.  I hated those people.  If I didn’t want to smile who were they to tell me to?  I didn’t know them and they didn’t know me.  Why didn’t they just shut the hell up?  (These were my inner thoughts.  I made them perfectly clear with a menacing glare to the person who commented.)

Now sometimes I smile when I walk down the block.  I smile for myself.  It perks me up a bit and helps me get through my day.

If you’re not feeling well and someone tells you to smile feel free to hate them and scowl but when you’re ready smile.  It might make you feel better.
