The Noise

the noiseI remember the very first thing I thought about Concord:

It is so quiet.

It took me a bit to get used to the silence.  No television, no cars honking, no sirens, no loud music playing, no yelling.  I could actually hear the wind blow.

NYC is nothing but noise.  Coming back it hit my senses hard.  I couldn’t hear myself think as I walked down the block and I became heavily dependent on my headphones.

But I’ve adjusted.  The other day I was walking on 34th street thinking about something and I realized that all the noise no longer got to me.

But some nights right before I fall asleep there are a few seconds where I don’t hear any noise and I can hear the breeze creep into the window.  And for a few minutes I miss NH.
