I awoke from a weekend nap gasping for air. I’d stopped breathing in my sleep and even once I was awake I couldn’t catch my breath. I weighed the options of paying $100 co-pay for an ambulance or $10 for a cab. I know cab drivers are infamous for driving quickly but I’ve never been driven so fast as when I got into a cab and asked the driver to drop me off at the emergency room.
I had bronchitis. It took all day and most of the evening to figure out. I was discharged around 10pm. I knew from the cab ride that I wasn’t far from home so I decided to walk in the dark. I didn’t get far before I realized I had no idea where I was going. And then I was approached by a stranger.
It was a teenager. He wore his high school jersey and talked a lot about how much he loved being on the football team. And he walked me all the way to my block, turned around, and went about his business.
I’m not sure what would have happened if he didn’t come along. He restored my faith in strangers and teenagers. Sometimes they get it right.
