Recently I volunteered at Interview Weekend for the Oliver Program. I got to see first hand some of the brightest African-American and Latino 7th graders in NYC. I was impressed and troubled.
Sitting in the room listening to the kids I began to see the divide. The difference between the children who are high performing and those who are having trouble finding their way.
Now I can’t seem to figure out if the wealth disparity in America is the biggest problem or the education disparity. I can’t deny that my education is beyond valuable to my current life and my future. It troubles me that I can’t articulate how a child today can access the education I’ve enjoyed. I feel inadequate in my desire to make a difference. But that never stopped me from working on anything before.
