A couple of weeks ago I attended the Oliver Program’s 30th Anniversary Recognition Ceremony. I was hoping it would jog my memory and help me remember my own recognition ceremony. I also wanted to listen to the wise words of the man who started it all. John Hoffman, the founder of the Oliver Program, gave the keynote address.
The truth is if I’d seen him on the street I would not have recognized him. This man, who played such a pivotal role in my life, seemed like a stranger until he took my hand and I heard his voice. He possessed the same warmth and wisdom I trusted as a child.
The moment passed so quickly I did not have time to say “thank you for changing my life”.
As I listened to his speech I became proud to be apart of this amazing tradition and I wondered why I was chosen and not another, perhaps someone more deserving.
I smiled, clapped, & cheered for the classes of 2018 & 2014. I knew their lives would change forever and for the better. Just as mine did.
