The truth is I did not want to go to St. Paul’s. The initial visit left me feeling like an outsider. I made a deal with John (Oliver Program founder) that I would leave after 3rd form if things didn’t work out.
Christmas break was the time to begin thinking of other schools and picking up applications. Instead I watched movies, ate, and enjoyed my gifts.
I decided to stay at SPS not because I instantly felt accepted and happy to be there. Instead I felt I could make it to graduation because there seemed to be a place for me. I began to realize that I was more than a young Black girl from the projects and I could tell that other people were beginning to see me outside of the box circumstance put me in.
A New Year means New Beginnings.
But first have a Very Merry Christmas!
