The pay phone next to the common room rang often.  As a 3rd former, if I was in the common area near a 6th former when the phone rang, she would yell out, “Get the phone newb!”

I answered the phone and looked for the person requested.

If a 6th former was thirsty and I was in the kitchen she would yell,  “Get me some water newb!”

I got a glass and filled it with water.

I didn’t mind the hazing so much as being called newb (new boy).  If I was going to accept a derogatory term I preferred it was newg (new girl).

I never thought of telling any of the teachers or advisers.  I wanted to be cool, accepted.  Resisting the commands seemed like a definite way to not be liked.  I had no idea how far things would go.
