Oliver also arranged for us to take an analytical writing class at Columbia University.
We were supposed to read our work out load for critique. I never volunteered first. I wanted to hear other people’s essays to see how mine compared. It was a small class but the other students were better writers than I was then. After hearing their essays I’d try to get out of reading but I had to participate in at least a few sessions.
The critique hit hard with comments on grammar, word choice, thesis choice, plot and character analysis. I was one of the best writers in my middle school but not even close to the best in this group. I wrote, edited, rewrote, revised, reviewed, and started from scratch. By the end of the summer I was prepared for the analysis of Chaucer, Hemingway, Shakespeare, and many more.
