Boom! Boom! Boom! It was sudden, loud, fast, and sharp. Every fifth grade student jumped out of their seats and immediately took cover under their desks.
“It’s just a shade.” Mr. Martian turned his right hand toward the window to show us what we’d all been afraid of. All three window shades in the class snapped up at the same time sounding like gunshots.
We weren’t ashamed of our overreaction. We exhaled and stared at the windows in amazement. “Get back to your seats.” He rolled his eyes and took his superior stance dead center at the front of the classroom.
“You are a product of your environment.”
He was dismissive and certain. I just wondered which he thought was worse – the product or the environment?
