My name is Natasha. I was born and raised in the inner city of Brooklyn – Brownsville, NY, in the Van Dyke projects. At the age of fourteen my acceptance to prep school exposed me to a world I could have never imagined. Millville – Concord, NH, became another sort of home with new friends that looked and spoke of things I’d never known. For many years when anyone asked me where I lived I’d say NY, then Brooklyn, then 45 minutes away from the city, and left it at that. I didn’t want my neighborhood to define me or exclude me from the world I’d just entered and wanted to be accepted in. Last year I attended my 15th reunion at St. Paul’s School. As I stepped onto campus I was reminded of the tradition I was now apart of as well as the home I’d left behind. At this point I’m done hiding behind a vague description of where I”m from, because if life is defined by our experiences, I am as much an inner city kid as I am a Paulie.
